The Decade of Digital

Updated: Jan 15, 2021

It’s 2020, and technologies are hitting brand new heights with frequent conversations surrounding AI, robots and let’s not forget VAR which is causing opposing arguments all over the world! With technology continuing to advance, many businesses are combating to stay on top of current trends and very few have a plan forecasted for the future.

As a Specialist Recruiter within the Sales & Marketing sector I often face statements such as “our business does not require marketing”, “social media isn’t for us” or “it won’t add any value”. However, with the world becoming increasingly digitalized, marketing is more crucial then ever.

Flashback to 20 years ago, I had just received my first mobile phone – it was a Nokia 3110 and was used solely for contacting my parents or sending the odd message to a friend. Today, the younger generation is more technologically savvy than ever before with most toddlers able to locate their way around an iPhone. Millennial’s are using their devices to communicate in new ways through social media messaging as opposed to texting and long gone are the days of voice calling… enter the new age video call and voice notes. Can you name the 65 social media apps that are considered popular within the UK right now?! Me neither…

With advancements occurring all the time it would be irrational for businesses to turn a blind eye to the importance of digital marketing. Many firms wrongly believe that digital and marketing candidates are required within specific industries only, however the way tech is growing, a significant amount are recognising the requirement of a full time digital marketing professional to enhance their brand awareness and ultimately attract more custom.

How digital marketing adds value to your brand helping to increase sales in 2020:

  • 2020 is the year of the customer – many customers conduct their own research when looking for a product/service, having a high SEO and engaging content can differentiate your brand in a crowded market.

  • The use of videos will continue to rise with people 85% more likely to buy a product/service after watching a video about it.

  • Providing a more interactive email experience is high on the list for 2020. Whilst email is not going anywhere anytime soon, email consumption, design and delivery are evolving providing new ways to grasp the reader’s attention and call to action.

Whilst a new decade brings new concepts and trends which in some cases are mind boggling, the digital and marketing sector is only set to expand further, leaving those without it at danger of falling behind.
